поставил x-window-system через apt-get install x-window-system
когда старую X startx в ответ получаю

screen(s) found, but none
have a usable configuration
no screen found

что нужно настроить чтобы X запустить то?

чтобы сделать первичные настройки запусти xf86config
man XF86Config
man xf86cfg - это уже конфигуратор графический

не помогает ЧТО?

Снеси поставленные x11-rpm, посмотри зависимости и что нужно в целом,
после чего проставишь и все будет тип-топ, или вовсе возьми с ближайшего
к тебе зеркала XFree86 4.2.1 для Linux'а и все дела.

у вас в секции screens вероятно описана не nvidia
у меня тоже debian,xfree 4.2.0(пересобранные), NVidia GeForce2 MX 100/200(модуль nvidia), и работает все великолепно
