народ как fontconfigу указать где конфиг лежит ?
пару строчек чтоб понятнее было :

$file /etc/fonts/fonts.conf
/etc/fonts/fonts.conf: XML 1.0 document text

$fc-list
Fontconfig error: Cannot load default config file

екземпл:  :)

$idesk
Fontconfig error: Cannot load default config file
Couldn't find font.
$ fc-cache
Fontconfig error: Cannot load default config file

        Note that the normal 'make install' procedure for fontconfig is to
        replace any existing fonts.conf file with the new version.  Place
        any local customizations in local.conf which this file references.
                                    ^^^^^^^^^^

edit the portion with <dir>/path/to/fonts</dir> in between the <fontconfig> and </fontconfig>

далее сфоримруем записи о шрифтах по указанным путям fc-cache
ну и смотреть все шрифты fc-list

читать fontconfig-user.html|txt

гм , хех .

сейчас погляжу ... я из пекеджей ставил => такого не наблюдал ...
