iDefense Security Advisory 01.22.08
http://labs.idefense.com/intelligence/vulnerabilities/
Jan 22, 2008

I. BACKGROUND

IBM Corp.'s Tivoli Provisioning Manager for OS Deployment is a network
boot server that facilitates central management of networked
workstations. It implements Preboot Execution Environment (PXE), a
Web-based administration service, DHCP, TFTP, and several additional
protocols. More information can be found at the following URL.

http://www-306.ibm.com/software/tivoli/products/prov-mgr-os-deploy/

II. DESCRIPTION

Remote exploitation of a buffer overflow vulnerability in the web server
component of IBM Corp.'s Tivoli Provisioning Manager for OS Deployment
allows attackers to cause a denial of service condition or potentially
execute arbitrary code with SYSTEM privileges.

This vulnerability specifically exists within the logging functionality
of the web server component. By making requests with a large HTTP
request method, an attacker can cause a static-sized buffer to be
overrun with data they supplied.

III. ANALYSIS

Exploitation allows an attacker to cause a denial of service condition
or potentially execute arbitrary code with SYSTEM privileges.

In order to exploit this vulnerability, an attacker must be able to
establish a session on TCP port 443 with target machine. No credentials
are required to trigger the vulnerable code path.

IV. DETECTION

iDefense has confirmed the existence of this vulnerability in IBM Tivoli
Provisioning Manager for OS Deployment version 5.1.0.3. Previous
versions may also be affected.

V. WORKAROUND

iDefense is currently unaware of any workarounds for this issue.

VI. VENDOR RESPONSE

The IBM Tivoli team has addressed this vulnerability within Tivoli
Provisioning Manager for OS Deployment Interim Fix 3, Version 5.1.0.3.
More information is available from IBM Document swg24018010 at the
following URL.

http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg24018010

VII. CVE INFORMATION

The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) project has assigned the
name CVE-2008-0401 to this issue. This is a candidate for inclusion in
the CVE list (http://cve.mitre.org/), which standardizes names for
security problems.

VIII. DISCLOSURE TIMELINE
