PLATFORM: Any system running HP Secure OS software for Linux Release 1.0 DAMAGE: Potential for denial of service attacks and for local users to gain unauthorized root access. SOLUTION: Apply the appropriate patch. MANUAL ACTIONS: None AVAILABILITY: The patches are available now. --------------------------------------------------------------- A. Background HP Secure OS software for Linux Release 1.0 was based upon the 2.4.5 version of the Linux kernel. Since that release, vulnerabilities have been discovered as follows: - i) a flaw in the syncookies mechanism used to protect a system against certain Denial Of Service (DOS) attacks. (Note: syncookies are not enabled in the default installation of Secure Linux Release 1.0.) ii) a flaw within the ptrace code within the kernel that could be exploited to allow unauthorized root access. These vulnerabilities are fixed in the Linux kernel version 2.4.9-12. A set of patches for HP Secure OS software for Linux has been produced using the 2.4.9-12 kernel sources as a base onto which the security features of HP Secure OS software for Linux have been ported.
