Hewlett Packard will not be liable for any consequences to any customer resulting from customer's failure to fully implement instructions in this Security Bulletin as soon as possible. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- PROBLEM: Security vulnerability in the BIND executable PLATFORM: HP9000 Series 700/800 running HP-UX releases 10.XX & 11.XX. DAMAGE: May allow remote users to gain root access or to disrupt normal operation on the name server. SOLUTION: Install patches (below) which upgrade BIND to version 4.9.7, or upgrade to version 8.1.2. AVAILABILITY: All patches are available now. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- I. A. Background The CERT advisory (CA-99-14) detailed several BIND vulnerabilities. The Berkeley Internet Name Domain (BIND) is an implementation of the Domain Name System (DNS) protocols. Recommended solution Apply the appropriate patches for BIND components noted below. s700_800 HP-UX release 10.01, 10.10 & 10.20 BIND 4.9.7 PHNE_20618 s700_800 HP-UX release 10.24 (VVOS) BIND 4.9.7 PHNE_21288 s700_800 HP-UX release 11.00 BIND 4.9.7 PHNE_20619 s700_800 HP-UX release 11.04 (VVOS) BIND 4.9.7 PHNE_21090 The bind revision 8.1.2 upgrade is available for HP-UX 11.00 via a web page: http://www.software.hp.com/products/DNS_BIND/index.html Registration for the download is necessary, once done, there is a link for installation instructions underneath the download button. You have the an option of staying with bind 4.X or moving to bind 8.X. The security holes mentioned in CERT advisory CA-99-14 have been fixed in both versions. Bind 8.X provides many additional features. This is the latest version featuring full support for negative caching (RFC2308) the clarifications in RFC 2181, DNS security extensions in RFC 2065, multiple virtual name servers, split DNS via "forward" zones, and general enhancements. Please reference the web page above for full details. NOTE: There are some migration issues that need to be addressed, but scripts are available which can ease the transition. C. To -subscribe- to future HP Security Bulletins or other Technical Digests, click the check box (in the left column) for the appropriate digest and then click the "Update Subscriptions" button at the bottom of the page.
