- -----------------------
- --- Issue Specifics ---
- -----------------------

The Samba Security Team at http://www.samba.org/ has reported a vulnerability
in Samba that can lead to a root compromise if the default configuration on
Samba for IRIX is changed.

The vulnerability has been discovered in all versions of Samba prior to
version 2.2.1a and allows an attacker to gain root access on the vulnerable
systems for certain types of Samba configurations.

SGI has investigated the issue and recommends the following steps for
neutralizing the exposure. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that these measures
be implemented on ALL vulnerable SGI systems. This issue has been
corrected in future releases of Samba for IRIX.

- --------------
- --- Impact ---
- --------------

The Samba package is not installed by default on IRIX.

Any SGI IRIX system running a version of Samba older than Samba 2.2.1a
may be vulnerable if the default configuration for Samba log has changed.

A local user account on the vulnerable system is not required
in order to exploit these issues.

The exploitable vulnerability can lead to a root compromise under
certain configurations detailed on the Samba website:
http://us1.samba.org/samba/whatsnew/macroexploit.html

The default Samba log configuration (log.%m) shipped with IRIX is not
vulnerable to this exploit.

This vulnerability have been publicly discussed in Usenet
newsgroups and security mailing lists.

This Samba vulnerability was reported by The Samba Security Team:
http://us1.samba.org/samba/whatsnew/macroexploit.html
http://www.securityfocus.com/bid/2928

- --------------------------
- --- Temporary Solution ---
- --------------------------

An immediate fix is available from Samba Website:
http://us1.samba.org/samba/whatsnew/macroexploit.html

If you are running Samba 2.2.0, the temporary workaround is to
edit your smb.conf configuration file and remove all occurrences
of the macro "%m". Replacing occurrences of %m with %I is
probably the best workaround for most sites.

- ----------------
- --- Solution ---
- ----------------

SGI recommends upgrading to Samba version 2.2.1a as the proper
solution for this problem.

The fixed free version can be downloaded from http://www.samba.org/
or http://freeware.sgi.com/

For customers who have purchased the SGI supported version of
Samba, please contact your SGI Support Representative and
request part number 812-0893-004 -- Samba 2.2.1a for IRIX on CD.
