- --- Update ---
- --------------
As part of on going security efforts, SGI has released patch 4469 and 447=
0
for this security issue.
The original text from SGI Security Advisory 20011103-01-I has been
updated to reflect this change.
- -----------------------
- --- Issue Specifics ---
- -----------------------
Gordon Irlam of the University of Adelaide, Australia reported that sh us=
es
/tmp files of a predictable name in creating files for input redirection
using the << operator.
Further investigation shows that tcsh, csh, sh, and bash on various Unix
systems also exhibit the same behavior.
See http://www.kb.cert.org/vuls/id/10277 for additional details.
SGI has investigated the issue and recommends the following steps for
neutralizing the exposure. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that these measures =
be
implemented on ALL vulnerable SGI systems. This issue has been corrected=
in
future releases of IRIX.
- --------------
- --- Impact ---
- --------------
The tcsh, bsh, and ksh shells are installed by default on IRIX.
A local user account on the vulnerable system is required in order to
exploit these shells.
The exploitation of these temporary files can lead to a root compromise.
This could be the case in the context of shell scripts run as root.
Original SGI Security Advisory:
ftp://patches.sgi.com/support/free/security/advisories/20011103-01-I
CERT reported this shell vulnerability:
http://www.kb.cert.org/vuls/id/10277
CVE reported a derivative:
http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=3DCAN-2000-1134
These shell vulnerabilities have been publicly discussed in Usenet
newsgroups and mailing lists.
- ----------------
- --- Solution ---
- ----------------
SGI has provided patches for these vulnerabilities for IRIX 6.5.10m/f
through 6.5.13m/f. The problems have been fixed in IRIX 6.5.14m and
6.5.14f. Our recommendation is to install the appropriate patch for your
operating system or upgrade to IRIX 6.5.14.
