-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

_____________________________________________________________________________

                          SGI Security Advisory

Title: Bulk Data Services (BDS) vulnerability
        Number: 20020804-01-P
        Date: August 12, 2002
        Reference: CAN-2002-0632
_____________________________________________________________________________

- -----------------------
- --- Issue Specifics ---
- -----------------------

It's been reported that under certain conditions, SGI's BDS (Bulk Data
Service) software can be tricked to give a client read access to any file on
a server system where BDS is running.

SGI has investigated the issue and recommends the following steps for
neutralizing the exposure. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that these measures be
implemented on ALL vulnerable SGI systems.

This vulnerability has been fixed with a patch for BDSPro 2.4 and in later
versions of BDSPro.

- --------------
- --- Impact ---
- --------------

BDS is an optional product and is not installed by default. To check if
BDS is installed on your system, execute the following command:

  # versions bds.eoe.server

If the output looks like the following, then BDS is installed.

  I = Installed, R = Removed

   Name Date Description

I bds 01/08/2002 Bulk Data Server, version 2.4
   I bds.eoe 01/08/2002 Bulk Data Server Software
   I bds.eoe.server 01/08/2002 Bulk Data Server Software 2.4

This vulnerability may be exploited by a remote user, and no local account
is required.

This issue has been corrected in BDSPro 2.5 and later versions.

This vulnerability has been assigned the following CVE:
http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CAN-2002-0632

- ----------------------------
- --- Temporary Workaround ---
- ----------------------------

Apart from not running BDSPro, there is no effective workaround available
for this issue. See solution section below.

- ----------------
- --- Solution ---
- ----------------

SGI has provided a patch for these vulnerabilities. The patch relies on
hooks in the kernel that are not present until IRIX 6.5.13 to fix the
vulnerabilities. SGI recommends either installing the patch for BDSPro 2.4
or upgrading to BDSPro 2.5 or later when it is released (on an IRIX 6.5.13+
system).
