                          SGI Security Advisory

         Title: CDE ToolTalk rpc.ttdbserverd vulnerabilities
        Number: 20021101-01-P
          Date: November 5, 2002
     Reference: CAN-2002-0677
     Reference: CAN-2002-0678
     Reference: CERT CA-2002-20
     Reference: SGI BUG 860033
Reference: Fixed in CDE 5.2 and patch 4799
______________________________________________________________________________

- -----------------------
- --- Issue Specifics ---
- -----------------------

It's been reported that there are vulnerabilities in the CDE
/usr/dt/bin/rpc.ttdbserverd daemon.

See http://www.cert.org/advisories/CA-2002-20.html for additional details.

This vulnerability has been assigned the following CVEs:
http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CAN-2002-0677
http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CAN-2002-0678

SGI has investigated the issue and recommends the following steps for
neutralizing the exposure. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that these measures be
implemented on ALL vulnerable SGI systems.

These issues have been corrected by a patch and in future releases of CDE.

- --------------
- --- Impact ---
- --------------

The CDE rpc.ttdbserverd binary is not installed by default on IRIX 6.5
systems. It is part of the optional IRIX CDE package (cde.sw.eoe).

To determine the version of IRIX you are running, execute the following
command:

  # uname -R

That will return a result similar to the following:

  # 6.5 6.5.16f

The first number ("6.5") is the release name, the second ("6.5.16f" in this
case) is the extended release name. The extended release name is the
"version" we refer to throughout this document.

To see if rpc.ttdbserverd is installed, execute the following command:

  % versions long | grep usr/dt/bin/rpc.ttdbserverd
  f 3899 594 cde.sw.eoe usr/dt/bin/rpc.ttdbserverd

If the output of the command is similar to the above, then rpc.ttdbserverd
is installed and the system may be vulnerable.

- ----------------------------
- --- Temporary Workaround ---
- ----------------------------

There is no effective workaround available for these vulnerabilities.
SGI recommends upgrading to CDE 5.2 and installing the appropriate
patch from the listing below.

- ----------------
- --- Solution ---
- ----------------

SGI has provided a patch for CDE 5.2.
