---------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Topic:
Updated exim packages are available, which fix a problem when handling
certain types of addresses with some configurations. The default
configuration does not exhibit this problem.
2. Relevant releases/architectures:
Red Hat Powertools 6.2 - alpha, i386, sparc
Red Hat Powertools 7.0 - alpha, i386
Red Hat Powertools 7.1 - alpha, i386
3. Problem description:
When the local exim configuration directs or routes an address to a pipe
transport without verifying that the local part is valid, the command
encoded in the local part will be executed.
This problem does not apply to pipes run from alias or forward files
since the local part is verified in that case. However if, for example,
all incoming mail is filtered in some way (perhaps with a virus checker)
without verifying that the local part is valid then your site may be
affected by this problem.
The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has
assigned the name CAN-2001-0889 to this issue.
It is recommended that all exim users upgrade to provided packages.
4. Solution:
Before applying this update, make sure all previously released errata
relevant to your system have been applied.
To update all RPMs for your particular architecture, run:
rpm -Fvh [filenames]
where [filenames] is a list of the RPMs you wish to upgrade. Only those
RPMs which are currently installed will be updated. Those RPMs which are
not installed but included in the list will not be updated. Note that you
can also use wildcards (*.rpm) if your current directory *only* contains the
desired RPMs.
Please note that this update is also available via Red Hat Network. Many
people find this an easier way to apply updates. To use Red Hat Network,
launch the Red Hat Update Agent with the following command:
up2date
This will start an interactive process that will result in the appropriate
RPMs being upgraded on your system.
