1. Topic:
Updated mpg321 packages are available for Red Hat Linux 7.2, which fix
a buffer overflow in the network streaming code as well as other bugs.
2. Relevant releases/architectures:
Red Hat Linux 7.2 - i386, ia64
3. Problem description:
mpg321 is a GPL command-line mp3 player.
It is possible for mpg321 before version 0.2.9 to segfault if given certain
specifically crafted data. In the case of network streaming, this data
would be remotely supplied, which could lead to remote code execution.
The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has
assigned the name CAN-2002-0272 to this issue.
It is recommended that users of mpg321 upgrade to these errata packages
containing mpg321 version 0.2.10, which is not vulnerable to this issue.
4. Solution:
Before applying this update, make sure all previously released errata
relevant to your system have been applied.
To update all RPMs for your particular architecture, run:
rpm -Fvh [filenames]
where [filenames] is a list of the RPMs you wish to upgrade. Only those
RPMs which are currently installed will be updated. Those RPMs which are
not installed but included in the list will not be updated. Note that you
can also use wildcards (*.rpm) if your current directory *only* contains the
desired RPMs.
Please note that this update is also available via Red Hat Network. Many
people find this an easier way to apply updates. To use Red Hat Network,
launch the Red Hat Update Agent with the following command:
up2date
This will start an interactive process that will result in the appropriate
RPMs being upgraded on your system.
5. Bug IDs fixed (http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla for more info):
55679 - gtoaster hangs when recording audio tracks with mpg321
56422 - RFE: make libmad a separate package
62714 - mpg321 segmentation fault when play Tainted love by m manson
