Red Hat, Inc. Red Hat Security Advisory
Synopsis: Updated bind packages fix buffer overflow in resolver li=
brary

Obsoletes: RHSA-2002:105
CVE Names: CAN-2002-0651
---------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Topic:
Various versions of the ISC BIND resolver libraries are vulnerable to a
buffer overflow attack. Updated BIND packages are now available to fix
this issue.
2. Relevant releases/architectures:
Red Hat Linux 6.2 - alpha, i386, sparc
Red Hat Linux 7.0 - alpha, i386
Red Hat Linux 7.1 - alpha, i386, ia64
Red Hat Linux 7.2 - i386, ia64
Red Hat Linux 7.3 - i386
3. Problem description:
ISC BIND (Berkeley Internet Name Domain) is an implementation of the DNS
(Domain Name System) protocols. BIND includes a DNS server (named),
which resolves host names to IP addresses; a resolver library
(routines for applications to use when interfacing with DNS); and
various tools.
=20
A buffer overflow vulnerability exists in multiple implementations of DNS
resolver libraries. Applications that utilize vulnerable DNS resolver
libraries may be affected. A remote attacker who is able to send malicious
DNS responses could potentially exploit this vulnerability to execute
arbitrary code or cause a denial of service on a vulnerable system.=20
Red Hat Linux does not ship with any applications or libraries that link=20
against the BIND resolver libraries; however, third party code may be affec=
ted.
The updated bind packages included in this errata contain the patches from
8.3.3 which fix the buffer overflow applied (backported) to the 9.2.1 sourc=
es.
4. Solution:
Before applying this update, make sure all previously released errata
relevant to your system have been applied.
To update all RPMs for your particular architecture, run:
rpm -Fvh [filenames]
where [filenames] is a list of the RPMs you wish to upgrade. Only those
RPMs which are currently installed will be updated. Those RPMs which are
not installed but included in the list will not be updated. Note that you
can also use wildcards (*.rpm) if your current directory *only* contains the
desired RPMs.
Please note that this update is also available via Red Hat Network. Many
people find this an easier way to apply updates. To use Red Hat Network,
launch the Red Hat Update Agent with the following command:
up2date
This will start an interactive process that will result in the appropriate
RPMs being upgraded on your system.0
