CONECTIVA LINUX SECURITY ANNOUNCEMENT
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------
PACKAGE : tar/unzip
SUMMARY : Directory transversal vulnerabilities
DATE : 2002-10-29 20:11:00
ID : CLA-2002:538
RELEVANT
RELEASES : 6.0, 7.0, 8
- -------------------------------------------------------------------------
DESCRIPTION
tar and unzip are programs widely used for distribution of multiple
files concatenated (commonly known as an "archive").
Both tar and unzip have directory transversal vulnerabilities in the
way they extract filenames containning ".." or "/" characteres at the
beginning.
By exploiting these vulnerabilities, a malicious user can overwrite
arbitrary files if the user unpacking such an archive has sufficient
filesystem permissions to do so.
The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has
assigned the names CAN-2001-1267, CAN-2001-1268, CAN-2001-1269 and
CAN-2002-0399 to this issue.
SOLUTION
All users should upgrade.
* Important note for Conectiva Linux 6.0 users:
In the version of tar distributed with Conectiva Linux 6.0 the
command line option used to enable bzip2 compression was '-I'. It was
changed to '-j' in recent versions (including the one of this
update).
