			SCO Security Advisory

Subject: OpenLinux: kernel kmod/ptrace root exploit
Advisory number: CSSA-2003-020.0
Issue date: 2003 May 09
Cross reference:
______________________________________________________________________________

1. Problem Description

The kernel module loader in the Linux kernel allows local users
to gain root privileges by using ptrace to attach to a child
process that is spawned by the kernel.

3. Solution

The proper solution is to install the latest packages. Many
customers find it easier to use the Caldera System Updater, called
cupdate (or kcupdate under the KDE environment), to update these
packages rather than downloading and installing them by hand.
