CONECTIVA LINUX SECURITY ANNOUNCEMENT
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------
PACKAGE : xinetd
SUMMARY : Remote buffer overflow
DATE : 2001-06-30 14:00:00
ID : CLA-2001:406
RELEVANT
RELEASES : 6.0
- -------------------------------------------------------------------------
DESCRIPTION
"xinetd" is an alternative to the inetd superserver.
Sebastian Krahmer from SuSe found an additional vulnerability in the
xinetd package that was not addressed in the previous announcement.
Internal string handling functions of xinetd do not properly handle
length arguments of zero. This can lead to buffer overflows and
arbitrary remote code execution.
The xinetd package is not used by default in Conectiva Linux 6.0,
therefore only users who explicitly changed the configuration of
their services in order to use xinetd will be vulnerable.
SOLUTION
It is recommended that all xinetd users upgrade their packages. This
update will restart the service if it is already running.
