It looks like that's just the way things are with <strong>mgetty</strong> and the
autoppp feature.
Once pppd starts, <strong>mgetty</strong> is out of the way.
So its pppd that has to obtain
and record usernames in utmp, like /bin/login does.
Well, to my knowledge, pppd doesn't do this, so you
won't see what your looking for in a who listing.
