appears clearly, then type in your login name in lower case. (If you type your login name with upper case letters, Unix assumes your terminal cannot generate lower case letters and will translate all subsequent upper case letters to lower case. You do not want this to happen!) After entering your login name, you will be asked for your password:
Another minor hiccup occurs when the first character you type at login time is upper-case, in which case the system assumes the terminal is uppercase only(!) and proceeds to flag lower-case characters. This is a testament to the longevity of the operating system when such an assumption was reasonable. Such a mode is awkward to work with so either logout and login again taking care to type a lower-case first character or if you are in the middle of logging-in then type <control-D>
